The Akademia ≠ Book Club.
It is a year-long intellectual odyssey, where a dedicated cohort engages in deep, shared study of Great Books, guided by a scholar, and culminating in a transformative summit retreat.
The Akademia is a year-long journey in shared reading, reflection, and intellectual friendship. A small cohort of committed participants deeply study Great Books—beginning with Augustine’s City of God—culminating in a multi-day, in-person retreat. The Akademia exists to restore the practice of serious reading in community. Over twelve months, a small cohort journeys through a demanding text, guided by a seasoned scholar and supported by regular check-ins and shared reflections. The centerpiece of the experience is a retreat: four days together in a secluded setting, around a table and a fire, reflecting on what we've read. But this retreat is not a reward—it is a culmination. Participation in the Akademia assumes disciplined reading, active attention, and mutual accountability. Those who have not engaged the text should refrain from attending the retreat, not out of exclusion, but out of respect: for the work, for one another, and for the sacredness of the conversation. This is a space for those who are ready to take books—and each other—seriously.
The Akademia begins with a close reading of St. Augustine’s "City of God," guided by a scholar. Together we seek not mastery, but formation. Not speed, but depth. You will read, discuss, write, and reflect alongside a small band of co-learners.
The cohort is 9 participants. Enough for diverse voices, few enough for deep trust. Members are invited, not recruited. Six members are confirmed, two more will be considered and approved by Matt and Bill.
We value our approach to learning in the classical style. But we need a guide to help ensure we don't fall into crevasses along the way. Each year, an expert guide will be selected to help us summit well at our annual retreat.
The Akademia will culminate each year with a retreat of four days, three nights. The retreat will balance learning, reflection, and guided discussion with time for relaxation and recreation. Costs for food, accommodation, and the guide will shared equally.
The Akademia, while focused on the ongoing learning for the year, also recognizes that great learning happens among people who are on some journey toward what Aristotle called friendship. A monthly check-in call will allow peripatetics to talk about life, work, reading progress, and build camaraderie.

We believe that reading foundational texts is not merely an academic task, but a spiritual and moral discipline. Participants commit to engaging the assigned readings with care, curiosity, and persistence—even when the text is difficult, strange, or slow.
The retreat is not a vacation—it is a summit, intellectually and spiritually. We gather to synthesize our learning, share insights and questions, and honor the work we've done. The retreat only fulfills its purpose if participants arrive ready to engage in deep, honest, and generous conversation.
The Akademia welcomes disagreement—not for argument’s sake, but for truth’s. We assume good faith, listen without interruption, and remain open to being changed by the text and one another. The best conversations are the ones that stay with us.
The Akademia is not a drop-in experience. It is a shared endeavor among peers. Each member is expected to prepare diligently. The integrity of our retreat depends on the mutual trust that we have all done the work. If you have not read the book, we ask that you refrain from attending the in-person gathering. You will forefit your deposit if you decide you cannot attend less than 180 days from the Summit.
Participants are encouraged to write a brief reflection paper before the retreat. These offerings are not academic requirements, but invitations to contribute thoughtfully, to help shape our common learning, and to bless one another with questions worth asking.
We seek to cultivate not just intellectual sharpness but also gentleness, curiosity, and grace. Our learning is not a contest, but a pilgrimage. Everyone at the table brings gifts. Everyone at the table is responsible for the spirit of the table.
